Art

Curriculum intent

At Lyndhurst we offer high-quality art education. Our aim is to engage, inspire and challenge our pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment and create their own works of art, craft and design.

Children learn about artists, craft makers and designers and study the core skills in drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, textiles and collage. Our spiral curriculum ensures pupils revisit these topics and themes, thus becoming proficient in each area.

We instil in our children the ability to think critically and become free thinkers. Pupils leave Lyndhurst knowing that art and design has the ability to reflect and shape history but also with the knowledge and experience of becoming contributors and advocators of our culture.

Children’s artwork is celebrated and displayed throughout the school and in the local community. During our annual art week pupils have the opportunity to take part in workshops with professional artists and the Camberwell Arts Festival.

What we OFFER

OUR PUPILS

Visits to art galleries including the Tate Modern, the White Cube and The National Gallery are important to further inspire and motivate the children. All children visit an art gallery at least once per year. Each year children present their work in a large-scale exhibition during the celebration week and parents are invited to view the work in a ‘gallery’ presentation.

HOW YOU CAN

HELP AT HOME

There are lots of ways that you can help at home such as taking your child to visit local and national art galleries and then discussing what they like or don't like or how something makes them feel. You could also start a sketch book with your child allowing them to explore with different pens and pencils and to experiment with shading, perspective, composition and texture. Art is a hugely diverse subject so just letting your child explore and express their emotions or responses to visual stimuli is hugely beneficial.
