Personal, Social & Health Education (PSHE)

Curriculum intent

At Lyndhurst Primary School, Personal, Social & Health Education (PSHE) is at the core of what we do and enables our children to become independent, confident, healthy and responsible members of society, as well as developing intellectually, morally, socially and spiritually.

Implementation

We follow the Jigsaw PSHE scheme as a framework for teaching PSHE across the school from Nursery through to Year 6. Each class has a weekly lesson. These lessons are further enhanced and celebrated through assemblies.  Our reward systems also reinforce the themes that run throughout the Jigsaw programme and are further promoted through child-to-child, adult to child and adult-to-adult relationships across the school.

We teach the National Curriculum, supported by a clear skills and knowledge progression. This ensures that skills and knowledge are built on year by year and sequenced appropriately to maximise learning for all children. Jigsaw PSHE directs our aim on developing the “whole child” through a spiral curriculum approach to developing knowledge, skills and understanding in the areas of;

  • Being Me in My World
  • Celebrating Difference
  • Dreams and Goals
  • Healthy Me
  • Relationships
  • Changing Me

 Impact

Our PSHE curriculum equips children with relevant and meaningful content, supported by a strong emphasis on emotional literacy, building resilience and nurturing mental and physical health. They strive to ‘live’ what is learnt and apply it to everyday situations within our school community. By the time children leave Lyndhurst we want them to have a willingness and ability to try new things, push themselves and persevere. With an ever changing society, we aim for our children to have a strong understanding of the diverse world around them and play a positive role in contributing to the school and the wider community.

What we OFFER

OUR PUPILS

Weekly opportunities to discuss issues and concepts. A focus on discussion rather than written recording. Our PSHE curriculum is woven into our behaviour policy and our wellbeing lessons.

HOW YOU CAN

HELP AT HOME

Talking to your child about how they feel and how they can manage feelings is really helpful-- you could encourage them to keep a journal or diary. It's also great to talk about the changes that will take place as they get older. Lastly talking about what it means to be a good citizen is really important as that may be different from family to family.
