Settling into Nursery & Reception
Starting Nursery or Reception is a big milestone — for children and for parents. We understand that it can feel exciting and emotional all at once.
Our aim is to make this transition as smooth and positive as possible, helping your child settle happily while giving you confidence and peace of mind.

A Flexible Approach to Settling In
Every child is different, so we adapt our settling-in process to suit their needs. We don’t rush; instead, we give each family the time and support they need to feel comfortable.
Our approach is gentle, responsive and designed to help children build confidence at their own pace.

Home Visits and Stay & Play Sessions
Before your child’s first full days with us, we’ll arrange a home visit so their keyworker can meet them in a familiar space. This helps build trust and gives us insight into your child’s personality and routines.
We also invite you to join us for stay and play sessions at our main entry points, so your child can explore the nursery environment with you by their side.

Starting Nursery with Confidence
When it’s time to start, we work with you to create a staggered start plan that suits your child. We avoid long, in-person handovers — these can sometimes make it harder for children to separate — but we stay connected in other ways.
Through the Famly App, you can share important daily details with your child’s keyworker, helping us provide the right care and reassurance from the very first day.
Helping Your Child Feel Ready for Nursery or Reception
Starting nursery or reception is a big step, and a little preparation can make all the difference. To help your child feel confident and excited:
- Talk about what to expect – Keep it positive! Chat about the fun activities, new friends, and kind teachers they’ll meet.
- Read books about starting school – Stories like Starting School by Janet and Allan Ahlberg or Lulu's First Day by Anna McQuinn can help them feel prepared.
- Practice independence – Encourage simple tasks like putting on their coat, using the toilet, and tidying up, so they feel more confident.
- Visit the nursery or school – If possible, go along together before the first day to help them get familiar with the new environment.
To make the transition smoother:
- Establish a routine early – Adjust bedtime and morning routines in the weeks before they start.
- Encourage social skills – Arrange playdates and practice turn-taking to help them settle in with new friends.
- Keep goodbyes short and positive – A quick hug, a big smile, and a reassuring “See you later!” can work wonders. If they feel nervous, a small comfort item (if allowed) may help.
